If you could do anything with your life, what would you do?
I would love to perform or make art. I really enjoy the arts and music and painting has been a part of my life since I was too young to remember. All my life I sang and wanted to perform and do shows. I really enjoy artists like Aquilo, Leona Lewis, Selena, Troye Sivan, and obviously, Beyoncé. I really enjoy choral music but also modern music. So, If I were to do anything I would love to be a performer and sing. The thrill of being on stage and singing and dancing is just remarkable. There’s no other feeling like it. I also really enjoy art and the art of watercolor and video. Adding to the performer part I would love to make art through watercolor and show it in video. I feel like so much emotion can be put into the arts and everyone can see it in a new light. That really connects to me because I believe that some of the most powerful moments in life are run through the magic of art and music. So, at the end of the day I would love to travel the world and showcase my art and my voice and meet new people and hear new thoughts and just connect through the power of arts.
What brought you to Mizzou?
I really didn’t go far because I’ve lived in CoMo for so long. Coming to Mizzou was honestly not my first choice. I wanted to escape Missouri and see new parts of the country and make different kinds of friends and not be known as one of the townies. In the end though I chose Mizzou because I didn’t want to leave my family and I didn’t want to have to go in insane debt for other schools. Mizzou was comfortable and I knew it so it made since to choose Mizzou over KU or UMKC. In the end, I learned to love Mizzou even more than I thought I could. Since coming to Mizzou I discovered its wonders and found out how Mizzou was my home even though I never left home. I discovered the parts of Columbia I never thought I could love and found spaces that introduced me to new things, new people, and new ideas.
Who would you say is/are your role model(s)? Why?
One of my biggest role models is my mother. My mother was a young mother and had me at 18. I grew up living in a one room house with 3 younger siblings and little to any money. My mom always strived to make my life happy and easy and not realize the problems that were occurring throughout my young life. I didn’t learn till I was older how hard it was for my mom to bring us up and have enough to feed us, give us gifts, and just give up a lot of her life to make sure we were happy. One of my most memorable Christmas memories was when my mother didn’t have a lot of money but still managed to get me and my siblings one big gift so we could have a Christmas. It wasn’t much but it meant a lot and at the time it was the best Christmas I’ve ever had, and still is. My mom had a hard life and she’s given up so much to make me and my siblings happy and successful. My mom is my role model because she never gave up and she never showed a sign of weakness or distress. She always made me feel safe and told me, “it’ll all be okay in the end, so don’t worry”. And It was- I’m the first person in my whole family to go to university and I couldn’t have gotten here without my mother. She’s so strong and has guided me throughout every life decision and without my mother I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
If you had a theme song to describe yourself, what would it be and why?
Bidi Bidi Bom Bom- Selena
I would say this song fits me well because at times I can be a bit extra. The song is extremely up beat and a bit of a chaotic beauty. I feel like that represents me well because at times I’m all over the place and energetic and saucy but I do it with a grace that makes no sense. Like, what is a bidi bidi bom bom? I think this song speaks to me and how people don’t know why I act the way I do sometimes and why I may be too energetic in the morning to be normal. WHICH IS GREAT!!! I love being over the top because I feel it fills the room with happiness and sometimes awkwardness which can develop the best of friendships. Also bless Selena- she’s my queen.
